The Cathedral: info & opening hours

A symbol of Cefalù and a must-see for anyone visiting the city, the Basilica of the Transfiguration, better known as the Cathedral of Cefalù, is a perfect example of the Arab-Norman influence that endures time and modernity.

The work was commissioned by King Ruggero II in 1131 and consecrated a century later in 1267. Since 2015 it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It stands in the heart of the historic center, in the square of the same name, with the two towers that frame it, rising in all its beauty at the foot of the Rocca, the limestone cliff that rises behind it.

The Arab-Norman style that characterizes it makes it one of the most important and beautiful testimonies of that period, not only for the imposing external architectural structure with the two lateral towers, but also for its interior characterised by the figure of Christ Pantocrator, depicted together in prayer with the four archangels. All around, a riot of holy apostles and religious symbolism, leaving anyone who enters speechless.

Located in the heart of the historical centre, you can reach the cathedral via a short walk. The Piazza del Duomo is accessible from the main street, and represents an ideal meeting point for a stopover at the numerous cafes and restaurants that surround it and from whose tables you can enjoy a privileged view of the Cathedral.

You can visit the cathedral every day from 10 am to 1 pm and from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Access to the Cathedral is free, while if you want to visit the towers, cloister, and muzzle, you must purchase a ticket, choosing one of the itineraries offered on the Cathedral website:
